This safari departs during the dry months of December to March and July to October. Explore and enjoy walking or riding the camel safari in Kenya. Dramatic and breathtaking scenic in this totally unspoilt wilderness area of Northern Kenya. 40 male Somali camels make up your transport – 10 for riding and the rest for baggage. The staff are all from the local Masai tribe and they add a great deal to your safari experience since they have retained all their tribal traditions and customs. You may be lucky enough to see elephant, greater kudu, reticulated giraffe, Gravy’s zebra, gerenuk and Oryx. Exploring the bush on foot, you capture the experience and nostalgia of the early safaris – once out of base camp no vehicles accompany this safari.
Day 1 – Mt Kenya
Depart our Nairobi and travel north of the city, past Mt Kenya. Overnight in Nanyuki.
Day 2 – Ngurunet
Depart early to Laisamis via Isiolo on the Marsabit road. From Laisamis head west through the Kaisut desert to Ngurunet.
Day 3 – Walking
We start the walk with camels as pack animals and local Rendille camel guides. The route may vary each time but basically head south of the Ndotos to the Malgis Lugger, which brings water from the Wamba, Maralal and Baragoi areas. Camp near the riverbed.
Day 4 – Walking
Day spent walking upstream. Again camp on or near the river bed. The local Rendille and Samburu people dig wells here. Picture taking is a problem and we suggest you just watch.
Day 5 – Walking
Head away from the Malgis towards the Ndotos and Keno River. Keno is a small clear stream, nice to wash in and cool off.
Day 6 – Walking
Leave camp early and head uphill with camel guides into the upper forest. A stick is handy here to fend off bushes. Views from the top are excellent on clear days and the forest is a beautiful change after the hot arid desert. Look out for elephant, buffalo, wild dogs and birds, particularly and Go-away-bird.
Day 7 – Turkana
Depart by vehicle to Lake Turkana and Loiyangalani.
Day 8 – Turkana
Day spent relaxing around the lake area.
Day 9 – Maralal
We head south to Maralal via South Horr and Baragoi.
Day 10 – Nairobi
South over the Laikipia plains to Nyahururu and Thompsons Falls. Then down the Rift Valley via Naivasha to Nairobi.
